IN CONVERSATION WITH KAMALIA STUDIO

A chance trip to a clairvoyant and an adventurous four months of travelling Europe with two complete strangers, was all the prompting that Melbourne based photographer Karina needed before starting her very own print & photography business, Kamalia Studio.

Kamalia's idyllic photographs invoke a feeling of wanderlust as they capture the incredible travels & adventures of Karina's from all around the globe.

The Verdè girls have been lucky enough to chat to the amazing Karina to learn all about the wonderful Kamalia Studio!

Tell us about Kamalia!

My name is Karina, and I started a print and photography business based in Melbourne, Australia. I have a business & marketing background however last year I travelled Europe for four months with two complete strangers and that's what started the photography business.

Why were you initially drawn to photography?

Ever since the iPhone was invented, I would always take photos of the beach and my friends would ask me how I made my pictures look so good. It honestly all just works in my brain. For example, the zoom, focus, light and colours!

What was the inspiration behind Kamalia Studio?

Before I went to Europe in 2022, I visited a clairvoyant and she said I will go to Europe to take photos and sell them as prints. I was thinking of doing this, but I wasn't 100% sure that I would as I was teaching myself photography. I thought well, if the photos aren't great, it can just be a hobby, but they ended up turning out okay!

Talk us through your ideal day with Kamalia Studio.

My ideal day in Europe would start by researching the best beaches in the area for me to capture, then travelling by bus to get to the chosen location to take a few photos. I of course always end up having a quick swim and then heading back to my accommodation!

Where has been your favourite location to capture?

My favourite location has been Capri in Italy. There was something so beautiful about the umbrellas on the shoreline and the way people laid on the beach against the grey rocks, all of which complimented the light blue water.

My dream location would be Hvar as it was by far my favourite place I visited on travels. However, I didn't take any photos there because I was so distracted by the absolute beauty of it all. I would also love to go to Puglia, Tropea and East Sardinia, all of which are in Italy. They are next on the list!

Any top tips for the upcoming European Summer?

Everyone needs to go to Hvar in Croatia! Go to Hula Hula bar at sunset and dance on the tables with a view of the glistening water. After it closes at 10pm get yourself on one of the free five-minute boat rides to Carpe Diem where there is one club on the tiny island right off Hvar.

What are your packing essentials for Europe?

My top packing items would be:

- A Verde bikini of course to last many days in the salt and sun!

-  A white linen dress.

-  A pair of sandals that you can wear to the beach but also out for lunch & dinner.

- An eye mask, for the plane and when the accommodation blinds are mostly non-existent.

- Some ear plugs to block out the person snoring in the shared hostel room!
